TULSA, Okla. — An 18-year-old shooting victim was laid to rest on Saturday.
FOX23 went to the funeral to see how Fedro Givens is being remembered.
It was standing room only as family and friends mourned the death of 18-year-old Fedro Givens. Police said Givens died after being shot three times in chest at the Echo Trail Apartments. His funeral was held at Christ Temple CME Church in north Tulsa.
Given’s sister thanked everyone who loved her brother.
“We thank you guys for loving our brother. We thank you for being a part of his life. Even though he had a lot of siblings, you guys were still his friends, his family,” she said.
The service was filled with memories of Givens.
Givens graduated Union High School back in May.
One of his teachers remembered the last day of class.
“The look on his face and that giant smile, and he had tears in his eyes because he was so happy, so proud of himself,” she said.
A coach told a story about Givens’ grit when it came to running.
“He couldn’t run that first year. He lost every race. But he came back that second year, and I said, ‘This is not the same boy.’ He came back outrunning everybody he came up against,” he said.
Everyone told a story of a young life taken too soon.
Given’s death was one of four homicides that happened on a single day, September 30, Tulsa’s deadliest day since the mass shooting at Saint Francis.
Given’s cousin said the violence shouldn’t have happened.
“I just wish we could do better. We all got things to go through in our lives, but this shouldn’t continue to have to happen,” he said.
