Severe turbulence on an American Airlines flight from Athens, Greece to Philadelphia Saturday sent 10 people to the hospital, including seven crew members.

Flight 759 was carrying more than 300 people when it encountered "severe turbulence," the airline said according to USA Today.

"We are taking care of our passengers and our crew members at this time and want to thank our team members for keeping our passengers safe," the airline said in a statement.

ProPublica reporter Jessica Huseman tweeted about the turbulence calling it "honestly terrifying."

Other witnesses said drinks went flying, and many of the flight crew were not buckled in when it happened, although most of the passengers were.

The flight landed safely at Philadelphia International Airport just before 3:15 p.m.

According to statistics from the Federal Aviation Administration, turbulence is a fact of flying and injures dozens of people every year.
