Kansas high school building evacuated after man threatened to shoot school staff members

CANEY, Ks. — The Caney, Ks. Police Department was alerted to reports of a man who made a threat against school employees at Caney High School Tuesday. The person who alerted officers was still on school property when the threats were made, according to police.

Caney Police Department immediately went to the high school and discovered the suspect who made the threats worked in the school’s administration building. As a precaution, the administration building was evacuated.

Officers contacted the suspect, 50-year-od John Swalley, of Caney, in the administration building who was taken to the Caney Police Department for questioning. Officers then conducted interviews with employees who were there when the alleged threats were made.

After interviewing Swalley, officers determined there was enough evidence to arrest him for two counts of Aggravated Criminal Threat.

Swalley was employed as a janitor at the high school at the time of the threats. He was taken to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections.

Charges have been forwarded to the Montgomery County Attorney’s Office for final review and form charging.

The Caney Police Department is working with Caney School District on this investigation.
