Friday evening a lights on ceremony will kick off this year's drive-through Christmas light display at Chandler Park in west Tulsa.
The "Lights on the Hill" display all began about nine years ago, City Councilor Jeannie Cue tells KRMG, when she realized she just had way too many Christmas lights in her cul-de-sac.
She was looking for somewhere to put them where the entire community could enjoy them without having to even leave the car, and a friend suggested Chandler Park.
Now in their eighth year, "Lights on the Hill" has grown from a modest 1/4 mile display open on weekends to a 7-nights-a-week display that's four miles long.
Several civic organizations, individuals, and area businesses kick in to make the "Lights on the Hill" magic, including some that aren't even based in Tulsa.
Cecil and Sons Tires, of Sand Springs, has one of Councilor Cue's favorite displays.
The company "takes old tires, and makes the cutest Christmas tree," Cue told KRMG.
She loves that the whole thing came together, and continues, thanks to community involvement.
"It's groups and organizations that have donated to keep buying new lights, and all the labor's free, it's volunteer," Cue said.
The Lions Club donated $1,000 to this year's event, for example.
Visitors will find there's no charge to drive through the "Lights on the Hill," but donations are cheerfully accepted.
The lights on ceremony takes place beginning at 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 28th.
The "Lights on the Hill" will stay lit until December 28th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
