Freezing fog results in numerous wrecks

car off roadway

Freezing fog made a mess of the Tuesday morning commute, especially north of Tulsa.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. George Brown says troopers responded to at least 20 crashes this morning in the Tulsa metro.

Brown singled out Keystone Expressway at 177th West Avenue and Highway 20 near Bird Creek Bridge was two of the more troublesome areas.

Brown implies the Monday drive to work was a breeze compared to Tuesday morning: “Yesterday morning we had light snow and we didn’t have the ice.  This morning we had the ice compounded with the fog. This morning was a far greater challenge for motorists than yesterday.”

Owasso recorded more than its share of traffic headaches Tuesday morning.  Owasso Police Sgt. Nick Boatman says, “The northern and western portions of the city of were blanketed by heavy fog this morning. This, plus a layer of thin ice covering the roadways roughly north of 96th St North, led to a series of collisions and vehicles losing control that kept Owasso Police busy for hours." Boatman says at one point police closed northbound Highway 169 at the 106th Street overpass because the roadway had turned into a sheet of ice.  Boatman says they responded to 6 traffic accidents, although he adds there were “countless” spin-outs.
