This purple squid was spotted on the ocean floor off the coast of southern California.
Scientists were amused by its large, almost fake-looking eyes.
At first, they mistook the squid for a cuttlefish, but later confirmed it was a stubby squid called Rossia pacifica.
They’re usually found in depths of about 1,000 feet, though have been seen as deep as 4,000 feet.
One of the explorers commented it looks like ‘some little kid dropped their toy."
KRMG’s oceanic expert Rick Couri said the large eyes are necessary for the squid to see in the deep, dark sea.
Live Science reported this variety of squid has the ability to create a mucus jacket over their bodies to collect sand and pebbles as a form of camouflage.
