The five-year-old autistic boy, named Daniel loves trash pick-up day.
"I showed him a YouTube video of a garbage truck a couple of years ago and he's been obsessed ever since," his mother Robin Newberger told SF Gate in San Francisco.
"He loves the predictable movement of the hoist and is excited by the entire spectacle. He waits all week for Monday morning pickup. Robin explained, “like many children on the autism spectrum, this has become a ritual for him.”
Robin takes video of most trash days but “this one is like no other.”
Because on this day, Daniel's favorite driver wasn’t finished.
Manuel Sanchez stopped the truck and got out.
Daniel chattered excitedly as Manuel crossed the yard and handed the boy a bag. Inside was a toy trash truck of his very own.
“That is so sweet! Thank you so much,” Robin can be heard saying on the video. Daniel didn’t say much, but he was clearly thrilled by the gift.
Manuel drives for E.J. Harrison & Sons. They were more open about their feelings.
“The company is very proud of Manuel,” wrote company spokesman Nan Drake.
He did something so remarkable without anyone asking him to do it.” The company did a little giving of their own when they presented Manuel with a restaurant gift certificate.
They also plan to honor him in the company newsletter.
