A fire in the kitchen area at Springdale Elementary near Pine and Lewis forced the evacuation of the schoolchildren at around 12:30 pm Friday afternoon.

The main part of the fire was quickly extinguished, but firefighters spent some additional time in the school to make sure the fire had not spread to the attic area.

Teachers said the kids were getting somewhat restless outside, but they were glad the weather was nice and said their evacuation procedure was executed very smoothly, and nobody was hurt.
