TULSA — Congressman Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) made international headlines when word leaked out that he had flown to Afghanistan with a team of people determined to rescue American citizens and allies from the Taliban-controlled country.

He tells KRMG he’s convinced the story which came out, which he says contained a number of blatant falsehoods, was leaked by the US State Department.

Moreover, he says the headlines forced him to abandon his personal effort and return to Oklahoma, because with his face plastered on worldwide media, he had become a liability to the operation.

But he still remains in touch with that team around the clock, he told KRMG Thursday, and that they continue to work on getting nearly two dozen people out of Afghanistan.
