State Board of Education temporarily suspends teaching certificates of 3 Sperry school employees

High School Principal Richard Akin and football coaches John King and Robert Park's teaching certificates are suspended amid the investigation.

SPERRY, Okla. — The Oklahoma State Board of Education has temporarily suspended the teaching certificates of three Sperry Public Schools employees amid an ongoing investigation into the alleged rape of a student.

High School Principal Richard Akin and football coaches John King and Robert Park’s teaching certificates are suspended amid the investigation.

This stems from an open criminal investigation into an alleged rape and cover-up inside the football locker room.

The decision was made during a State Board of Education meeting in Oklahoma City on Tuesday. The board’s deliberation on the matter happened behind closed doors in the executive session.

Three Sperry High School students have been accused of sexually assaulting their classmate, and are being charged as adults. They are fighting those charges.

This incident is believed to have happened last October, and inside sources said the incident was allegedly videotaped and sent out before it was brought to the police’s attention.

The two Sperry coaches and the high school principal are under investigation for possible cover-up of the alleged crime.

Inside sources have told FOX23 that it’s possible the three knew about the assault and even had video of it, but never turned it over to police.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education confirmed with FOX23 earlier this month that they were investigating and the three employees had been suspended from the school district.

Now, their teaching certificates are suspended until the court case and investigation wraps up.

If proved true, the state superintendent has spoken out harshly against this kind of behavior in Oklahoma schools.

The State Board of Education declined further comment on the matter due to this being an active investigation.

The employees haven’t been formally charged of any crime and haven’t spoken publicly on the matter, but FOX23 is working on reaching out to each of them for comment.

FOX23 has reached out to Sperry Public Schools for a statement regarding the decision, but haven’t heard back at this time.

The names of the three students are publicly listed on court documents, but at this point FOX23 has chosen to withhold their names due to their age and the potential they could be charged as youthful offenders and not as adults in the upcoming weeks.
