It’s the last day of 2024 and with no severe weather in sight, we can stop counting tornadoes for the year.
According to National Weather Service data, 148 tornadoes were confirmed in Oklahoma in 2024. That comes up one short of matching the most tornadoes ever recorded in Oklahoma, which was 149 in 2019.
Setting 2024 and 2019 aside, the last time the state saw this many tornadoes was 1999 when 145 were recorded.
2011 and 2015 were busy years too, with 119 and 111 tornadoes respectively.
The slowest tornado year in Oklahoma was a decade ago when, in 2014, there were only 16 recorded in the state.
Back to 2024 now, the busiest months were April (56), May (53) and November (33). Those numbers for April and November set new records.
