Pioneer Woman: Ree Drummond tells story from crash, updates status of husband, nephew

PAWHUSKA, Okla. — “Pioneer Woman” Ree Drummond gave an update Monday on the health of her husband Ladd and nephew Caleb after last week’s fire truck crash that injured them both.

“What a week,” Drummond wrote in a post on her Pioneer Woman website on Monday morning.

Ladd and Caleb had been trying to put out a grass fire spreading to their ranch near Pawhuska when their two trucks crashed head-on.

“We have an incredible community of neighboring ranchers and cowboys and everyone helps their neighbor whenever a fire breaks out—so there were friends on the scene to help,” Ree Drummond said as she broke down what happened last Wednesday.

“Ladd was stiff but able to walk around immediately after the accident, so he refused medical attention. This was partly because he wanted the paramedics to focus on Caleb, partly because he was still a little stunned by the accident, and partly because cowboys don’t like to admit when they’re hurt. After Caleb’s ambulance left, Ladd drove himself to the hospital in Pawhuska, thinking he’d just quietly get checked out. He called me on his way and tried to explain what happened, at which time I promptly lost all feeling in my knees before running out the door and heading to town.”

Drummond said she wouldn’t take readers through every part of the last few days as the two stayed in the hospital, but that they are both expected to be OK.

She says Caleb broke some ribs, had a concussion and a few other injuries while Ladd broke his neck in two places.

“Have I mentioned cowboys don’t like to admit when they’re hurt?” she says.

Ladd had to be taken to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa to get surgery.

He and Caleb have both since been able to return home for their recovery.

“For both Caleb and Ladd to be okay—injured, yes, but fixable—after seeing the condition of their trucks makes me not want to spend one second complaining,” Drummond says.

She included two pictures in her post showing the damaged trucks after the crash.

“So rather than wish the accident didn’t happen, I’m gonna live in a state of gratitude—not just for the guys being okay, but also for the love, kindness, and prayers of so many of you.”
