TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa police department says Sgt. Craig Johnson passed away Tuesday afternoon after being shot multiple times during a traffic stop early Monday morning.

“Sergeant Johnson leaves behind his two young boys, his wife, his parents, and hundreds of his brothers and sisters with the police department,” the post from Tulsa Police reads.

Officer Aurash Zarkeshan, who was also shot multiple times, is still in critical condition.

Tulsa Police say David Anthony Ware and Matt Hall are both in custody, accused of shooting and attempting to hide the shooter respectively.

They say Ware shot the two officers during the stop around 3:30 a.m. near 21st and Memorial and Hall assisted Ware in fleeing the scene and hiding from police.

Officer Aurash Zarkeshan pulled Ware over after seeing his car with a paper tag that had expired, according to court documents.

Tulsa Police Sergeant Craig Johnson arrived shortly after to back Zarkeshan up.

Zarkeshan told Ware to get out of the car because it was going to be towed, but police say Ware refused.

Police say Johnson tried to use his taser before Ware allegedly grabbed it and Johnson pepper-sprayed him while trying to get him out of the car.

Ware then allegedly reached under his seat for a gun and police say he fired three times at the two officers.

Johnson was shot in his head and body, Zarkeshan was shot in his head, upper body, and lower body.

Charges are now being upgraded against Ware, to Murder.

His alleged accomplice, Matt Hall, who's accused of driving Ware from the scene, is now facing a charge of being an Accessory to Murder.

Both men remain in jail, Officer Auresh Zarkeshan is still in the hospital but is said to be improving.
