Traffic stop turns into fatal trooper-involved shooting

VINITA, Okla. — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has identified the man who was killed after a shooting on the Will Rogers Turnpike Thursday morning.

Troopers say 34-year-old Robert D’Lon Harris of Tulsa, Oklahoma died after an altercation involving OHP.

OHP say the incident began with a traffic stop around 9 a.m. near the Vinita toll plaza.

Troopers say there was woman driving the car they stopped and Harris was in the passenger seat.

The trooper brought the female driver back to his patrol unit to speak with her, while Harris was still outside the vehicle.

According to the OHP, when the trooper returned to speak with Harris, he re-entered the passenger’s side door of the vehicle despite warnings from the Trooper.

The Trooper continued to interact with Harris and as he was was exiting the vehicle again, the trooper discharged his firearm one time.

Harris was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

The woman and trooper were not injured.

Troopers say they found a loaded semi-automatic pistol and narcotics in the suspect’s vehicle while processing the scene.

The name of the trooper or the woman driving the car has not yet been released.

OHP says the trooper has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
