Tulsa impacted as American Airlines staff shortage causes flight cancellations across the county

American Airlines cancels hundreds of flights due to staffing issues

TULSA, Okla. — American Airlines is cancelling hundreds of flights in total adding up to dozens each day until at least mid-July as it tries to balance out high travel demand with a staffing crunch, maintenance issues, and even current severe weather conditions across the country.

READAmerican Airlines cancels hundreds of flights through mid-July

American, like all other carriers, has seen a resurgence in travel demand now that people are venturing out and taking vacations again now that COVID-19 precautions have been lifted throughout the country and even in parts of the world.

American said the planned cuts were about one percent of its total capacity, but that still equals out to about 950 flights in just the first half of July and many more through the rest of June.

Two flights in and out of Tulsa International Airport to American’s hub at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport were cancelled on Monday afternoon and evening to accommodate the cutback plans.

The airline said it was notifying passengers well in advance of any cancellations so they don’t find out the minute they show up at the airport and have to change plans last minute.

Many cities seeing cancellations have service in and out of them multiple times daily and so moving passengers around to earlier or later flights is doable.

If new flights are not workable, refunds are available the airline said.
