TULSA, Okla. — Change is coming to Tulsa.
Mayor G.T. Bynum recorded a video, showing the empty Gilcrease Museum. All of the exhibits have been removed and placed in storage as crews build the new $65 million dollar facility.
Bynum shared the video in a Facebook post, walking through the empty building and discussing the future of the museum.
The new museum isn’t expected to open until 2024.
You can learn more about the museum here.
Tulsans own the greatest collection of American art and history (outside of the federal government’s collection) at Gilcrease Museum. This generation of Tulsans is building a new facility worthy of that world class collection. The new facility will allow more of the incredible collection to be displayed, will be the only museum in Oklahoma capable of housing major traveling exhibits, and will do a better job of taking in the incredible views of the natural surroundings. To start the project, the old building will be demolished. The old museum has been a landmark for Tulsans through generations. Tonight, I had an opportunity to take one last sentimental walk through the now-emptied building before it comes down. It felt like walking through your old home when you’re about to move: lots of memories coupled with excitement for the future. I thought some of you might be interested in what Gilcrease looks like with all the art in storage, so shot this quick video. And you can learn more about the new building that will rise on this site over the next two years at gilcrease.org!
