Tulsa police officers once again allowed to drive patrol cars home

For the last few years, you may have noticed a bunch of police cars parked near the edge of city limits each night.

Officers had to park their squad cars at places like the Bixby Walmart and then drive their personal cars home from there. Tulsa Fraternal Order of Police told KRMG that was because the department sacrificed the right to take their cars outside city limits to avoid layoffs.

Now, FOP President Clay Ballenger tells KRMG a new agreement again allows officers who live outside Tulsa city limits to drive their cars all the way home.

“This way they can drive their car home, keep it maintained and clean.” Ballenger said.

Under the new agreement, Ballenger said, officers will reimburse the city for the extra cost of gasoline.

"The officers pay a mileage from the city limits to their house if they live within 40 miles of the center of the city." (41st and Yale) Ballenger added.

This will make things easier on officers by allowing them to go straight home after work or go straight to a call once they’re within city limits.
