A Tulsa police supervisor shot and killed a man after the suspect apparently tried to hit him with a pickup truck.
It began with a traffic stop about 4:30 p.m. in the 800 block of N. Louisville Ave., according to TPD Ofcr. Demita Kinard.
The driver of a red Dodge pickup threw the vehicle into reverse and smashed into the patrol vehicle, disabling it, then took off, she told KRMG at the scene of the shooting.
He smashed into another squad car during the pursuit, disabling it as well, and kept going.
Meanwhile, a TPD sergeant was deploying stop sticks on Pine Street near Dawson Ave. in an attempt to disable the pickup.
The driver saw the sergeant as he approached the intersection, Kinard says, and veered in an attempt to hit him with the truck.
That's when the sergeant opened fire, hitting and killing the suspect.
The vehicle veered off the road to the north, then came to a stop.
No officers were injured.
Police have not yet released the name of the suspect.
They did tell KRMG the name of the sergeant, but KRMG agreed to withhold that information until all of his family members are informed about the incident and assured of his safety.
This was the first officer-involved fatal shooting for TPD in a little over two years.
