Two children sledding struck by separate vehicles in separate incidents

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — UPDATE 2/4/22: Broken Arrow police say the 12-year-old boy who was hit on East Albany Street has died. Investigators are looking for the vehicle that left the scene.

Broken Arrow police investigated two separate incidents of children sledding and being struck by vehicles Thursday. Police said that the incidents were both separate, and both children were sledding when they entered the roadway and the collisions occurred.

Around 5:20 p.m., Broken Arrow police officers were called to East Albany Street for a collision involving a child sledding and a vehicle. The 12-year-old boy was sledding on the north side of Albany Street when he entered the roadway and was struck by a truck traveling west on Albany. The truck did not stop and continued westbound on Albany after hitting the child.

Video and witness statements indicated to investigators that the truck was a 3/4-ton or 1-ton newer-model white pickup truck with dark windows and extended mirrors. The child was treated for his injuries at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators are still working to identify the truck and its driver.

Police are asking that if anyone has information on this case, contact Office. M. Long at (918)-451-8200 and reference case #22-0788.

The second collision occurred 44 minutes later at 6:04 p.m., Broken Arrow police officers responded to reports of a vehicle having struck another child on West Pensacola Street. The 12-year-old boy had gone sledding when he entered the street and was struck by a passing vehicle. He was dragged for an unknown distance before the vehicle was able to stop. The boy was later transported by a private vehicle to a nearby hospital with apparent minor injuries.
