A Wagoner middle school athlete dies during a cooldown lap around the wrestling mat after practice.
Wagoner Superintendent Monte Thompson says the death Wednesday of 14-year old Ty'Darius Penney stirs a lot of questions.
"I do not have the answers. There's not an answer why," Thompson said.
He also told the News On 6 that an ambulance took Penney to the hospital but it was too late.
"There can't be a lowest low in education to be in charge of a child and that child pass away."
The medical examiner hopes to have a comment today on what caused Penney's death.
"It was pretty straightforward talk. We've lost a good young man at the fault of none of the students, none of the coaches."
School administrators talked to Penney's classmates yesterday.
Thompson said that, in the wake of Penney's death, final exams are postponed until after the holidays.
"Not a whole lot of math and reading's taking place. We're dealing with the humanistic side of education and dealing with our loss."
Thompson says school administrators are reviewing what could be done to keep a similar tragedy from happening again.
"Students at that age are going to question, 'Could I have done something?' And also my coaching staff."
The rest of the wrestling team canceled last night's match.
Thompson says they've made no decision on whether to compete in a tournament this weekend.
