TULSA, Okla. — With 31 tornadoes, Oklahoma broke the previous record for number of tornadoes in October. The previous record was held by October 1998, with 27 tornadoes.
October had more tornadoes than every other month combined in Green Country this year. This month normally averages just a little over two tornadoes per year in the state.
This puts Oklahoma with a total of 56 tornadoes in 2021 so far.
The annual average for the state is 57 tornadoes, which means October’s tornadoes count brought us back to a near average count.
Of all the tornadoes this year, 20 were unrated, 12 were rated EF0, 23 were rated EF1 and one was rated EF2. No stronger tornadoes have occurred this year in Oklahoma.
