With Super Bowl LVII this weekend, the FOX23 Severe Weather Team decided to take a lookback at some of the weather extremes from the past 56 years.
The coldest Super Bowl with an outdoor stadium was in 1972 in New Orleans. It was 39 degrees when the Dallas Cowboys took on the Miami Dolphins and beat them. The coldest Super Bowl with an indoor stadium was in 2018 in Minneapolis. It was 2 degrees outside with a wind chill of -14 degrees! The Philadelphia Eagles took home the win against the New England Patriots in this game.
The hottest Super Bowl game actually occurred last year in 2022 in Inglewood, California. It was 82 degrees at kickoff but temps rose to 85 degrees during the game, making this the warmest game. In close second is the 1973 game where it was 84 degrees at kickoff.
The snowiest Super Bowl game happened in 2006 in Detroit. There was 1.1″ of snow that fell when the Steelers beat the Seahawks.
The iciest Super Bowl game happened in Atlanta in 2000. It was a multiple day event where freezing rain happened and caused very icy conditions across the region. It even kept the Rams from being able to send players to practice on Saturday. Regardless the Rams beat the Tennessee Titans at this game!
The wettest Super Bowl was in 2007 in Miami. They saw 0.92 inch of rain fall during this game where the Colts took home the win!
The windiest Super Bowl game was in 1989 in Miami. There were winds 15-20 mph with wind gusts as high as 25 mph during the game. The 49ers took home the victory that day.
