The annual forecast includes the likely number of storms in the Atlantic basin hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

CSU’s Tropical Meteorology Project team released the forecast Thursday, calling for an above-average season that will top the number forecast for the past two seasons.

The prediction also includes the most named storms CSU has forecast in any April outlook.

“One of the reasons that we are forecasting more named storms than we have in prior years is that we are naming more storms now than we used to ... due to technological improvements,” Phil Klotzbach, research scientist in the CSU Department of Atmospheric Science and lead author of the report, told CNN.

The report also includes predictions for:

  • 90 named storm days
  • 9 hurricanes
  • 35 hurricane days

The National Hurricane Center , is expected to release it’s first tropical outlook for the 2022 hurricane season on May 15.
