The Lay’s Classic Potato Chip recall has been upgraded to Class I.

Frito Lay issued the recall in December after it was found that there was a potential or undeclared allergen, specifically milk, in the chips, the Food and Drug Administration said at the time of the recall.

The alert applied to “a limited number of 13 oz. bags” of chips that were distributed to some brick-and-mortar and online stores in Oregon and Washington. They were able to be purchased as early as Nov. 3, 2024.

The FDA said that 6,344 were affected by the recall. A representative of the company said in an email to Cox Media Group’s National Content Desk the recall was completed last month and that all recalled product had been removed from store shelves.

The bags had UPC 28400 31041, a Guaranteed Fresh date of 11 FEB 2025 and one of two manufacturing codes, either 6462307xx or 6463307xx, the FDA said.

The FDA upgraded the recall on Tuesday to a Class I, the agency’s highest risk level, because exposure or consumption of the chips could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death,” the FDA said in the newest alert.

If you have questions about the recall, you can call Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 800-352-4477 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.
