TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Police said they are still looking for the shooters who shot and killed 18-year-old Fedro Givins Friday night at the Echo Trail Apartments.
Givins’ mother, Sandra Goff, told FOX23 she got the call that night from a firefighter on the scene.
“He finally said he was shot in the chest, and I said I’m on my way. But of course, I was at the hospital [for] two hours wen I had already found out he had passed away,” Goff recalled.
She said her initial feeling was complete shock.
“Disbelief. I still sit in disbelief. Who would shoot him?” She said. “My son was not a violent person. He never met a stranger.”
She also said Givins recently graduated from Union High School in May and was planning to get his CDL license. He said he was close with all of his family, and he would call or reach out daily, especially to his sister.
“He was funny. His soul. His spirit. He was amazing,” Goff said.
All of his family said Givins was always compassionate and caring, even to strangers.
“He was one of the good ones, you know? The neighbor sent me a message and said he would always come by there, pass by and say, ‘Good morning. I hope you have a good day. Do you need anything? Do you need any help?’ He was that type of person,” said Goff.
His older brother, Bobby Givins, was also heartbroken by the news.
“It’s just hard,” he said. “It’s hard. That kid, I thought I was going to die before him. He was never supposed to pass at 18.”
They said Givins was the baby of the family, and had 14 older siblings.
Police are still trying to piece together why he was shot and who did this.
“Tell. Call the police. Call the hotline. Let them know what you know,” Goff said. “They say you can be anonymous. Just tell. This is my son. 18-years-old. He just graduated. Put yourself in my place.”
Goff and the rest of Givins’ family made it clear they want to see change in Tulsa. They said it’s important for young adults and teens to be vocal when serious crimes like these happen.
Givins’ killing just happened to be hours before police said another teenager was shot and killed at McLain High School’s homecoming football game.
According to FOX23′s record, the number of homicide victims under 20-years-old in 2022 has already passed 2021′s record. In 2020, there were a total of six teen homicide victims. So far, this year there have been eight.
Since July 17, five teenagers have been shot and killed in Tulsa.
The violence amongst teenagers is something that has gotten the attention of Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin.
“My perspective is that there are more and more kids of a younger age that are involved in violent acts, and we don’t know why that’s happened,” he said. “But I have talked with other chiefs of police in other cities that are dealing with the same thing. It may have been social distancing and keeping kids out of school. [This] may be a contributing factor in what we are seeing today.”
Givins’ family strongly believes a start to ending this violence in the community is stepping up and being vocal, especially the parents.
“If these two [suspects] are your children, you know that they did something. You need to turn them in,” Goff said. “You need to let them know that what they did was wrong. They took a life. They took a life. He was loved by his family.”
Anyone with information on Givins’ death is asked to call Tulsa Crime Stoppers at (918)-596-COPS. You can remain anonymous when calling.
