TULSA, Okla. — Drivers will notice changes to signs they pass every day in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been phasing out the old posts that hold roadway signs and replacing them with new monotube posts.

The posts are replacing the old truss-style posts.

The decision was made roughly a decade ago to switch to the new monotube posts.

ODOT spokesperson T.J. Gerlach says the new posts come with a couple of benefits, including that they do not need to be lit.

“Lighting is not needed really anymore. New coatings on the signs are reflective enough that just headlight illumination from people driving by is more than enough to light the sign,” said Gerlach.

Gerlach said an added benefit is that they are harder for people to climb.

Several monotube posts have already gone up on Highway 412 near the new turnpike that’s under construction, and several are located on Highway 169 in Owasso.
