OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Firefighters from Oklahoma, Kansas and Indiana trained at Riversport in Oklahoma City this week for severe flood situations.

About 20 firefighters attended the swift water rescue training through OSU’s Fire Service Training Program.

Instructor Wade Porter told FOX23, “Especially throughout the last couple years, we’ve had a couple incidences where we’ve lost people, fatalities from the water, so we want to make sure that everyone’s able and capable to handle those situations.”

Techniques learned are used for rescuing people stranded in their homes or in/on their cars.

Techniques include:

- Fire Hose Rescue: Using a fire hose to quickly rescue someone

- Shallow Water Crossing: When first responders link their bodies together to rescue someone when they can’t use/don’t have a boat

- Knowing how to flip a boat back over after it capsizes

The training was voluntary and lasted two days. “It just makes them that much more of a valuable resource,” said Porter.

The next swift water rescue training offered through this program is in late June. For more information on the program, click here.
