Tulsa — Mental health isn’t something people like to talk about because of the stigma.

Therapist Molly Drury, with Grand Mental Health, stopped by KRMG to talk about change.

“When you grow up in a toxic household, you learn toxic ways,” said Drury. “And then you get to be an adult and you’re like, these things aren’t working. These aren’t healthy coping mechanisms.”

Drury says that can lead to addictions and eating disorders.

She says if you think you’re experiencing anxiety or depression, you need to look at how long the symptoms last.

Is it normal stress? Or something that’s impairing how you function day-to-day?

“Our brains actually set off the same neurotransmitters when we’re excited and when we’re anxious. The difference is what are we telling ourselves.”

She says grounding skills are great for things that you can do yourself to help cope with a stressful situation.

Box breathing help calm you and regulate your heart rate. That’s when you breathe in and hold it for four seconds, let it out for four seconds and sit for four seconds.

There’s also an exercise called 54321. It uses your five senses. Drury says look around and list the five things you feel, touch, smell and taste.

If you’re experiencing a problem, the state has a mental health crisis line. Just text or call 988 and you’ll be connected to a real licensed therapist.
