TULSA — It may not come as a huge surprise to those who daily drive along the highways and byways of Oklahoma, but a new study indicates the state has some of the worst infrastructure in the country.

The study was released by QuoteWizard, an insurance industry website where consumers can shop for the best deals on premiums.

The data, however, came from the Federal Highway Administration; it was compiled by research analyst Adam Johnson at QuoteWizard.

“We put together a composite ranking based on three factors, which includes percentage of roads in poor condition, costs per motorist, and percentage of bridges structurally deficient,” Johnson told KRMG. “Based on those three ranking factors, we put together a composite ranking score to rank all 50 states from 1 being the worst all the way to 50th being the best, and we did find Oklahoma to be the second worst when it comes to road infrastructure.”

The FHA data lists 33% of Oklahoma's roadways as in poor condition, and 14% of its bridges structurally deficient.

As for the cost to motorists, Johnson says, the data shows drivers in Oklahoma pay an average of $900 a year in repair and maintenance costs because of poor roads.

He says the main takeaway from the study seems to be that states which spend a larger percentage of highway funds on maintenance, as opposed to building new roads, have the best overall road conditions.

“When you look at the top three worst compared to the top three best, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida have a very low percentage of poor quality roads, and they also spend a high percentage on road repairs,” Johnson said. “Quite conversely to the top end, we see a lot of roads in poor conditions and a small percentage of spending on road repairs.”

He says citizens concerned about roads need to pay attention to which lawmakers, or candidates for office, have solid plans to address infrastructure.
