TULSA, Okla. — A happy new year quickly shifted to a scary one after a Tulsa family said a bullet came through their roof.
For years, the City of Tulsa and law enforcement across Green Country have stressed the dangers of shooting guns off into the air to celebrate holidays such as Independence Day and New Year’s Day, known as ‘celebratory gunfire.’
Many people posted about hearing gunfire in their neighborhoods overnight.
This isn’t how anyone wants to ring in the New Year.
The Huff family was together in their home celebrating when a bullet came through their roof out of nowhere and landed in front of their son’s bedroom.
“We went from celebrating to all of sudden worrying,” said Merton Huff.
He said the bullet made its way through their roof and into their home.
“What we thought was fireworks was not fireworks; it was a bullet that had come through our sheetrock and landed on the floor,” said Merton.
He said the bullet landed right in front of their son’s bedroom door in a hallway they walk down often throughout the day, everyday.
“The first thought I had was ‘where did this come from?’ and so, we’re looking out the window trying to see if this is a neighbor,” said Merton. “Where is this bullet coming from and how could it come through the roof?”
Merton said he and his wife were in disbelief.
“It was just unbelievable that it could possibly come through all of those layers into our house,” Merton said.
Merton’s wife, Monique, said she was stunned when she heard the loud bang.
“It was like a shock moment for me overall and the kids started crying cause when they figured out it was a bullet, they felt unsafe,” said Monique.
After the scary situation, the parents said they felt it was best to have everyone sleep in the same room.
“Those bullets, you never know where they are going to land and you never know when you shoot a bullet in the air...[you] could’ve taken somebody’s life and not even know it,” Merton said.
Next year, they aren’t taking any chances.
“[We’re] getting a hotel next year. We literally thought, ‘maybe, we will stay at a hotel next year’ because there’s anxiety now about just being at home,” said Merton.
The Huff family said they hope their story can be a lesson for gun owners to remember bullets have to land somewhere.
