The U.S. military is using “off-the-shelf” smart phone technology to help soldiers locate each other on the battlefield.
The website National Interest says the ATAK, or Android Tactical Assault Kit, is an app that can be used on an Android smart phone, that soldiers can use for map and location data, as well as sending regular text, voice, video, or image messages to other soldiers.
In fact, special ops troops have been spotted with a rectangular, fold-down mount on their body armor for their phones.
There's also an ATAK app, with the less aggressive acronym translation of “Android Team Awareness Kit,” for civilian and police department use
