NOWATA, Okla. — The Nowata, Okla. community is preparing to host the third annual Okie Hillbilly Handfishin’ Tournament Saturday, July 9.
The tournament features several different activities such as a cornhole tournament, a men’s wet t-shirt contest, outhouse races, a homemade ice cream churn off, a Ms. Catfish Pageant and a noodle eating contest.
For any novice hillbillies out there, FOX23 did some research on what each competition would entail for participants:
- Outhouse Races: A race where teams of four to five members create their own outhouses and race them.
- Noodling or Handfishing: This is fishing for catfish using one’s bare hands. The noodler places their hand inside a discovered catfish hole in order to catch the fish.
The event is sponsored by Fischer Bait and Tackle and will feature several different vendors and food trucks for attendees. It’s also been advertised as a family-friendly event, with an area specifically for children. The Catfish Catch Kid’s Corner features a water slide, face panting and other games and activities. Entrance to the Kid’s Corner is a donation to the “Aim High” Food Bank. Attendees must donate two non-perishable food items per child.
The tournament will also feature a dunk tank, and proceeds from the tank will go towards the Nowata Community Splash Pad.
According to the event’s Facebook page, teams have four days left to register for the tournament. The first place prize is $2,000, second place is $1,000, third place is $500 and the biggest fish prize is also $500.
