OWASSO, Okla. — They’re celebrating winning at the The Universal Cheerleaders Association Nationals Championships [UCA] in Orlando.
I’m told they worked really hard for this and some of the team have been cheering together since 7th grade.
Rinzey Walters is one of the captains she says it was amazing when their name was called.
“You’re just holding your teammates hand and everyone’s shaking and it’s just like that feeling of relief where all your hard work finally paid off,” exclaimed Walters.
They beat out 24 other teams to the title.
Captain Reece Cunningham says bringing the trophy to Owasso is really special.
“Its kind of an honor to hold it just because UCA is such a prestigious competition not many people get these jackets or that trophy so its just cool that the small town kids from Oklahoma get to do that,” expressed Cunningham.
The team has won 7 state cheerleading titles but this is their first UCA national win.
The competition was held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando Florida.
Owasso’s Routine includes a fight song, a band dance and a crowd involvement cheer.
Coach Leslie Van Meter says the team worked really hard.
“This routine was 3 minutes long so your jumping up and down and screaming for 3 minutes you know I don’t know about you but when I climb my stairs I get out of breath so when these kids are doing it and jumping up and down and looking like they have the time of their lives making it look easy,” stated Coach Van Meter.
They’re back in the gym already and are hoping to round out their season this year with another state title.
They had a live audience at the competition and it was also streamed on national Varsity TV.
What’s amazing is that they were actually in 5th place after the prelims but they read the judges comments, made some changes and then bounced back to take first place!
