OWASSO, Okla. — An Owasso skating rink is making sure everyone gets a chance to skate and have fun, even if loud music and bright lights aren’t their thing.

FOX23 visited Owasso’s Wheels and Thrills to talk to families enjoying Wheels and Thrills’ monthly sensory-sensitive session.

Tammy Johnson, the co-owner of Wheels and Thrills, said it’s a good atmosphere for families who want to visit when it isn’t loud.

“It’s quiet in here and the lights are low. And so, it’s a really good atmosphere for a lot of families that just love to come and visit when it’s not so loud and crazy,” said Johnson.

Johnson owns Wheels and Thrills with her husband and they love seeing everyone having a good time.

Alicia Linker said the event is a special time for her 4-year-old daughter, Allison.

“My daughter’s autistic, so for us, this is a great way where she can get out and run around, burn some energy, be with other kids like her,” said Linker.

“Every kid just wants to feel like a normal kid, and this is a way that she can feel like a normal kid and get to experience everything else everyone else gets to experience, but not get overwhelmed,” she continued.

Julie Nesterenko said her 7-year-old son Anton has learned to skate here thanks to the sensory-sensitive sessions.

“It’s kinda some indirect therapy in multiple different ways,” said Nesterenko.

Nesterenko said she appreciates the worry-free atmosphere and the growth she’s seen in Anton.

“There’re not too many places where I can sit back and relax and know that he’s doing positive things. And I don’t have to worry about anything bad happening to him,” she said.

Wheels and Thrills holds a sensory-sensitive session the first Sunday of every month. The next sensory skate is on October 2 and costs 7 dollars to get in.
