ROGERS COUNTY, Okla. — UPDATE (11/9/22 1:45 P.M.) — The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) identified 39-year-old William Fairweather as the man shot and killed by Rogers County deputies Wednesday morning, after he fired a nail gun at deputies.

The OSBI is being assisted in the investigation by the FBI, Cherokee Nation Marshal Service, Rogers County Sheriff’s Office and Rogers County District Attorney’s Office.

The OSBI said the investigation involves Native Americans and falls under the McGirt Supreme Court decision.

Rogers County deputies shot and killed a man after he fired a high-powered nail gun at them during a standoff near the Port of Catoosa

Deputies were at Valmont Utility, at State Highway 266 and Alliance Drive, where the man barricaded himself inside a room Wednesday morning, according to the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office. Rogers County Sheriff Scot Walton said the man was an employee, who was not scheduled to work at the time.

Walton said they were called out to the building around 4 a.m., when the man barricaded himself in a storage room and armed himself with a high-powered nail gun.

In an effort to get the man out, Rogers County deputies fired tear gas into the building after almost two hours of failed negotiations with deputies and a marshal with the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service.

Authorities said the man began firing the nail gun at deputies, and the deputies shot back and killed the man.

Walton said one deputy did have minor injuries.

“One of the deputies was struck in the side and upper chest area with something,” said Walton. “We’re not really sure whether that was projectile from the nail gun or shrapnel from it. This nail gun had the ability to shoot a large nail a great distance,”

Investigators are still trying to determine why the man went to the building this morning.
