TULSA, Okla. — A proposed Oklahoma law would require every public school building in the state to undergo a risk and vulnerability assessment in an effort to better prepare against potential mass shootings within three years.

Senate Bill 100 (SB100) proposes that the Oklahoma School Security Institute conduct the assessment in every school in the state by July 1, 2026. After the initial assessment, districts have to coordinate with the Oklahoma School Security Institute – a branch of the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security – for a reassessment every five years.

The assessment could also include recommendations to increase security presence on school district property.

Dewayne Pemberton (R-Muskogee) authored the bill.

If passed, the bill will be effective on July 1, 2023.
