TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Police Department (TPD) are investigating their 18th homicide after a welfare check led to the discovery of a 61-year old woman dead inside of her apartment home on Saturday.

FOX23 spoke with the victim’s daughter who said her mom had recently gotten out of the hospital and out of rehab after suffering from COVID-19 and a Pulmonary Embolism.

Destiny Thomas said her mom had been excited about going home.

She reached out to Tulsa Police after growing concerned about her mother.

Now Tulsa Police are investigating the death of 61-year old Cheryl Thomas as a homicide.

Tulsa Police found her inside her home at the Avondale Apartments located at 71st Street and South Trenton Saturday afternoon while responding to a call for a welfare check.

“It appears to be a homicide,” said Lt. Watkins, “we have an elderly female who was found in her apartment after family had been unable to get a hold of her for the last couple of days.”

Lt. Watkins says they don’t believe her death was a random act, and they are now looking for the victim’s husband, who is considered a person of interest in the case.

Saturday evening we spoke with Thomas’ neighbor, Cara Johnson, who describes her friend who went by the nick name “Cookie” as a woman of faith.

“She was one thousand percent all in for God, that’s what she’d always say.” Johnson said. “We’d go to church together, preacher would be preaching, when it got real good she’d go come on with it, come on!”
