TULSA, Okla. — McLain High School is mourning the loss of a retired long-time coach and athletic director.
Luther Pegues passed away on Wednesday, December 10 at the age of 84.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Coach Pegues, a beloved member of the Tulsa Public Schools family,” said Mick Wilson, Executive Director of Athletics at TPS. “Early in my career I had the opportunity to coach against Luther and knew him to be a fierce competitor. More importantly, I was able to get to know him as a leader and a friend. Over his more than four decades in our district, he mentored countless young people. Our deep respect for him and his legacy will live on in the lives of the students and team members who held him in the highest regard.”
Pegues is in the Tulsa Public Schools Athletics Hall of Fame. Pegues was a part of TPS for more than 40 years with a majority spent at McLain. McLain High School said in a social media post he devoted his life to shaping and supporting young people. That devotion was reflected in the naming of McLain’s new basketball court back in 2020 as the Bolton Pegues Court.
“His presence was felt in every corner of McLain, and his legacy will continue to live on through all those he mentored and inspired. While we mourn this tremendous loss, we also honor and celebrate the extraordinary life he lived and the indelible mark he leaves behind.” the school wrote.
Pegues was also an all-state basketball player at Booker T. Washington High School.
A funeral will take place on Saturday December 20 at New Life Training Center, located at 1203 South Columbia Avenue at 1 p.m. The community will be able to visit his body at The All Faith’s Chapel of Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors Inc., of Tulsa, located at 1414 North Norfolk Avenue on Friday, December 19, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. A burial service will held at the Crown Hill Cemetery, located at 4301 East 66th Street North following the funeral.
