TULSA, Okla. — Brandon Silas has been ordered by a judge to serve 25 years in prison following a federal conviction in May for the death of a 29-year-old woman.

Silas, 45, was convicted by a federal jury in May for distribution of fentanyl resulting in death; four counts of use of a communication facility in committing, causing, and facilitating the commission of a drug trafficking felony; and money laundering.

“This sentence sends a message to those who distribute and profit from the distribution of poison in our communities,” said Joseph B. Tucker, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Dallas Division, which covers the State of Oklahoma. “The men and women of DEA and their law enforcement partners work tirelessly to hold accountable those praying on the addictions of others, never wavering in the pursuit of justice.”

In February 2022, victim Haley Scruggs got in a fight with her boyfriend over the desire to buy opioids. Scruggs has relapsed after completing drug rehabilitation, and her boyfriend discovered her and offered to help her stay clean.

The following day after this fight, Scruggs called her friend, Silas, multiple times and texted him over 30 times. A DEA agent said that through texts, Scruggs has Silas information on how to get to her home.

Silas arrived at Scruggs’ home and messaged her that he was there. Scruggs stopped responding to her phone following his arrival.

Scruggs’ boyfriend was worried and left work to check on her. He found her unresponsive. She would later be pronounced dead.

According to court records, Silas was aware of Scruggs’ death and continued to sell drugs.

Silas will remain in custody until he is transferred to a prison facility.
