City of McAlester updating landfill fee structure

MCALESTER, Okla. — The City of McAlester said it will be updating its landfill fee structure due to rising operational costs.

According to the City, landfill fees were temporarily waived during the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterwards, the City’s solid waste contract provided two complimentary roll-off containers per month where residents could dispose of large items.

However, the City said these two complimentary roll-off containers are no longer meeting the City’s disposal needs, leading to the City needing to pay for additional roll-offs.

The City said paying for these additional roll-offs has led them to pay around $3,600 per month that’s not included in the City’s current budget.

The ordinance update will raise the minimum tipping fee from $5 to $10 for all loads under 500 pounds. Loads over 500 pounds will be charged $0.02 per pound.

The City said these updates aren’t meant to generate revenue, but to simply cover the costs of the additional roll-offs required by residents.

The updated changes can be found in Section 48-106 of the updated City Code.

The updated fee structure will begin on Jan. 2, 2026.

Only City of McAlester residents may use the landfill and all residents must show proof of residence when disposing their items.
