Oklahoma DEQ providing citizens with free radon test kits

By Fox23.com News Staff

The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is providing Oklahomans with free radon test kits as part of National Radon Action Month.

The Oklahoma DEQ said, “Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium inside the earth. Radon is dispersed in outdoor air but can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings. Exposure to elevated levels of radon can cause lung cancer.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and leads to over 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year.

Around 1 in every 15 homes across the United States has radon levels at or above EPA recommended levels.
