SAPULPA, Okla. — Excitement is high in Sapulpa as Sapulpa Main Street kicks off their year long Route 66 giveaways where, three times a week, someone will be gifted with a portion of the asphalt from the original Mother Road.
“We’re here to give away a piece of the Route 66 asphalt that we’ve collected from downtown during our streetscapes, during our construction,” shared Michael Jones, the Owner of Gasoline Alley Classics where the first two giveaways were held. “We’re going to give away the second piece that we got ready to go and so some lucky person is going to get to take a piece of history home that’s part of the Mother Road.”
The first piece of Route 66 was given away on Tuesday. David Reed, the 2026 President of Sapulpa Main Street, said it’s been amazing to watch the giveaways begin.
“The whole concept behind this is drawing people into Sapulpa, not only to give them a piece of history, but also to introduce them to Route 66 inside of Sapulpa and all the wonderful charm and rich history that Sapulpa itself has of being along the Route.”
Jones explained the first few giveaways will be held at Gasoline Alley Classics, but said there are plans to host drawings at other Sapulpa businesses later in the year.
“I’m a tourist destination business here in Sapulpa and we’re going to incorporate some of the other businesses as well too. I sit on the board with Sapulpa Main Street and so we just decided, since I was kind of plugged in on it from the very beginning, we’ll just start with me and get the ball rolling and then we’re going to work in some of the other retailers to where it’s going to spread around to where there will be different retails that do it.”
Reed said he’s excited to see the giveaways grow as time passes.
“If they can leave with a little bit of history and a lifetime of memories, how awesome is that? We’re grateful for this opportunity and we really look forward to seeing how this takes off. This is week one. We’re in the middle of January, not exactly your peak traveling season, but we still have folks interested and people showing up. We’re getting inquiries all the time, so please check out our Facebook page and math out your trip through Sapulpa as you travel Route 66 in the centennial year.”
The next Route 66 giveaway will be held on Jan. 10 at 5:00 p.m. at Gasoline Alley Classics in Sapulpa.
