Local sorority volunteers at food bank for “We are One” Day of Service

TULSA, Okla. — A local sorority gathered at the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma on Monday for the “We are One” Day of Service, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma said this special event on MLK Day is symbolic of the dedication local groups like Alpha Alpha Alpha Omega, the local chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, have to help their community.

Our news partners at FOX23 spoke with Lynetria Johnson, president of Alpha Alpha Alpha Omega, on why the group participates in the Day of Service.

“This is an annual initiative that we honor Dr. Martin Luther King on his birthday, so we pick a organization to volunteer. For the last three years we’ve been volunteering at the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma because this organization is near and dear to us,” said Johnson.

Johnson said one of the sorority’s initiatives is fighting food insecurity.

“The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma falls in line with that initiative. We don’t just volunteer on this day at the food bank, we’ve done it several times throughout the year,” said Johnson.

The sorority helps in a variety of ways, such as packing after school meals for children and bags of groceries for families.

“It’s really about making a difference in the community, being able to help those in need. Dr. Martin Luther King was about service and helping in his communities, wherever they are, and so for us it really is about remembering those who are in need, and how can we help them and make an impact in the community,” said Johnson.
