MUSTANG, Okla. — Students at Mustang High School participated in a walkout demonstration on Thursday.
Mustang’s walkout happened alongside the walkout held by students at Nathan Hale High School to protest against the actions of ICE and President Trump.
In a letter sent by school administration to parents, the school district said the walkout wasn’t school-sponsored or approved.
Mustang Public Schools said classes continued as normal for all students who chose not to participate in the walkout and said staff quickly responded to supervise the students involved in the walkout.
The district stated that any students who left campus and didn’t return to class by the end of the designated lunch period at 1:15 p.m. would have their absence addressed in accordance to the school’s attendance policy and student code of conduct.
The full message sent to Mustang Public Schools’ families is below:
“Mustang Families,
We want to share an update regarding student activity at Mustang High School today.
Late this morning, a group of students participated in an unsanctioned demonstration near the Performing Arts Center. This activity was not school-sponsored or approved. School administrators and staff responded immediately to supervise students and prioritize campus safety. Classroom instruction continued for students who remained, and the learning environment was maintained.
Following the demonstration, some students chose to leave campus. While Mustang High School has an open-campus lunch for juniors and seniors, that privilege is limited to designated lunch periods. Once those periods concluded at 1:15 p.m., students were expected to be on campus and in class.
When students are not where they are expected to be during the school day, the district’s ability to supervise and ensure safety is significantly impacted. For that reason, students who remained off campus beyond authorized times will be addressed in accordance with District Attendance Policy and the Student Code of Conduct.
We encourage families to talk with their students this evening about school expectations, the importance of remaining on campus during the instructional day, and making safe, responsible choices.
