Bixby administration sends letter to parents addressing possible walkout consequences

By Kirk McCracken

BIXBY — Students at school districts all over the state have staged walkouts to protest ICE and the Trump administration, and some schools have suspended the students that participated.

Bixby High School students are reportedly planning a walk-out next week, and Superintendent Lydia Wilson sent a letter to parents clarifying the school’s role when students walk out of class without permission. KRMG received the letter from a Bixby parent after not getting a response from the school.

The letter stressed “district neutrality” by respecting the First Amendment rights of students. However, standard attendance policies will apply, and any absence will be unexcused. If a parent calls to allow their student to protest, it will be counted towards the student’s verifiable absences. School staff members will monitor the protest to ensure student safety and minimize instructional disruption.

Earlier this month, Mustang Superintendent Charles Bradley suspended 122 students after a walk-out, and some state lawmakers would like to see the protests stopped.

Social media posts have said the Bixby student-led walkout is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23.
