New diverging diamond interchange to be built in west Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — A new diverging diamond interchange is set to be built at West 81st Street and Highway 75 to help Tulsa Hills shoppers with traffic flow.

We reported when IKEA announced it will be opening its first Oklahoma location at Tulsa Hills this fall. The store will occupy the former Belk space and cover around 51,000 square feet.

The nearby intersection will soon see changes, which the City of Tulsa said are to help with the expected increase in traffic.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said construction on the nearly $27 million diverging diamond interchange is set to begin in June and last until spring 2028, weather permitting.

The City is contributing $2.7 million to the project from the Surface Transportation Block Grant.

ODOT said the project will replace both Highway 75 bridges with new modern structures, and will widen West 81st Street, including the diverging diamond interchange.

“Diverging diamond interchanges are an effective option at improving both safety and efficiency at highway interchanges. The left hand weave reduces conflict points where collisions can occur and allows for freer-flowing access to the highway,” said ODOT spokesperson TJ Gerlach.
