River Parks Authority to hold guided “First Day Hikes” at Turkey Mountain

By Fox23.com News Staff

TULSA, Okla. — River Parks Authority will host free guided hikes at Turkey Mountain on New Year’s Day as part of the nationwide “First Day Hikes” campaign.

The “First Day Hikes” campaign encourages people to start the year healthy and outdoors in nature. Last year’s event saw over 300 hikers, River Parks Authority said.

Our news partners at FOX23 spoke with Ryan Howell, Project Manager at River Parks Authority, on what’s planned for the campaign in Tulsa.

“We have several volunteers who have signed up to lead free, guided hikes here at Turkey Mountain and you can show up and be a part of those. We are going to be leading hikes every 30 minutes. Those will be about two-and-a-half mile hikes that will take about an hour and a half or so,” said Howell.

The guided hikes will be held on Jan. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Turkey Mountain’s main parking lot (6851 South Elwood Avenue).

“This gives a lot of people who have never been to Turkey Mountain the opportunity to come. If you haven’t been here before, often times you might not know your way around the trails, so you got a little intimidation there and this is an easy way to do that,” said Howell.
