OKLAHOMA COUNTY — The Oklahoma County Democratic Party released a statement on Monday addressing the error in filing for the state’s primary elections with the Oklahoma State Election Board.
The filing error does not allow for Oklahomans who are registered as Independent to vote in any upcoming primary and runoff elections. There are 488,000 registered Independents in the State of Oklahoma.
In the statement issued by the Oklahoma County Democratic Party, the group expressed its regret and is asking for state leadership’s help in correcting this mistake.
“We deeply regret this administrative oversight and the impact it has on Oklahoma’s independent voters. This error is unfortunate and we call on staff and state leadership to take real accountability,” reads the statement, in part.
“Independent voters are our neighbors, family members, and community advocates who care deeply about Oklahoma’s future,” said Amy Warne, OCDP chair. “They deserve a voice in choosing candidates who will represent them and excluding them from our primary process contradicts our fundamental values of inclusion and democratic participation.”
