TULSA, Okla. — If you get stuck in the snow or have a crash, Tulsa Police offered some basic safety tips on their Facebook page.
“If you do get into a jam, please try to get off the road as much as possible,” said Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg. “Turn your hazard lights on and stay in your vehicle.”
He said if you do have to get out of your car, get away from the roadway as quickly as possible and go to a safer area.
Depending on the situation, he says you can call 911 or the Tulsa Police Department’s non-emergency number at (918) 596-9222
He said it’s a good idea to fill up your vehicle’s gas tank completely before the storm gets here because in the event you’re stranded, he says you can stay in your vehicle longer with the engine and the heater running.
He also reminded people about the basics of driving on snow: Go slow and keep as much braking distance between you and other vehicles as you can.
Wait longer to enter an intersection when a light turns green, he says, to make sure that motorists on the cross street who are approaching a red light are able to stop.
He says to check that your tires are properly inflated to give you the best possible traction on snow.
He also reminds people to give snow plows as much room as possible to do their work.
