COWETA — The Coweta Police Department and the City of Coweta held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday which starts construction on the new Coweta Police Department facility. The approximately 12,800-square-foot police station was funded through the “One for Coweta” sales tax initiative and is expected to be completed by spring of 2027.
Coweta Police Chief Mike Bell, Mayor Naomi Hogue, and Wagoner County District Attorney Jack Thorpe all spoke about the new facility, located near 111th Street just off of Highway 51, which will be a significant upgrade from the department’s current building, which is approximately 2,500 square feet and dates to the late 1930s. The cost will be $8.4 million, and the new station will provide expanded space and modern infrastructure to support the department’s day-to-day operations and future growth as Coweta continues to grow.
“This has been a long journey, and it’s only possible because Coweta citizens chose — again — to invest in public safety,” Chief Bell said. “Our current facility was built in the late 1930s and, even with updates over the years, it can’t be expanded to meet today’s needs. This new building will give our officers and dispatchers the space and infrastructure to serve Coweta now and as the community continues to grow.”
The new facility will include a secured vehicle sally port, an expanded dispatch area designed for future staffing growth, and dedicated spaces to support modern public safety operations, including a patrol briefing room, investigation offices and interview rooms, and evidence intake and processing areas. The design also includes a physical training room, a tornado shelter, and an on-site generator.
The land for the facility was donated by Tommy Thompson, Inc., with the stipulation that the property be used for public safety purposes. BKL and Flintco are serving as project partners.
